LONDON - Britain's not popularly known for fine wine, but it pipped stiff competition from France and beyond to win an international award for sparkling wine.
Nyetimber Classic Cuvee 1998 was crowned the best bottle-fermented sparkling wine at the International Wine and Spirit Competition, where British wine producers snapped up a total of 16 medals -- four more than last year.
Australian entrants defended their top overall position on the basis of their combined gold, silver and bronze medals. South Africa came second, followed by France, Spain and Italy.
"We have a small vineyard so we can concentrate on the details," said Dermot Sugrue from the Nyetimber vineyard in Sussex, southeast England.
"And we have the patience to mature our wines for seven years, so they are on the market only when they've reached their full potential."
Of the winning sparkling wine, the judges said: "A mass of fine persistent tiny bubbles find every corner of the mouth spreading the flavours with them."
