Background |
As part of China’s “the 10th Five-Year” Plan, the production of wine reached nearly four hundred thousands kiloliters in 2005, with a per capita consumption of 0.38 liters. Production will achieve the amount of eight hundred thousands kiloliters in 2010, and under the national policy of restricting stronger liquors in China, the proportion of wine in the overall alcoholic drinks market might account for 3% of all potable spirits sold. This rapid growth will result in the prospect of a golden age for the Chinese wine market.
The quantity demanded of wine materials in China has increased by the amount of 20% every year, so that wine merchants from Chile, France, South Africa and Australia have found new business opportunities in the large import market of wine materials in China.
Of the nearly 200 brands of wines in Shanghai’s wine market, there are more than 160 international brands, covering almost eight tenths of the market. 90% of the consumption of wine is through catering.
This is a market and an opportunity that no one looking for growth in the wine market will want to pass up. |
